Greetings Humphrey Families~

Welcome to the 2022-2023 school year! I trust that summer vacations were filled with family reunions, baseball and soccer games, along with interesting, fun explorations of the other 49 states and beyond!

Whatever you did this summer, I am sure it was fun-filled family activities. As we begin this new school year, here is important information for you to know.

TUESDAY AUGUST 9th -MEET YOUR TEACHER DAY 2:00-3:00pm Please bring your child’s school supplies at this time. When you are done in your child’s classroom, please stop by cafeteria to meet and join the PTSA, Children’s Choice - the BEST after school program, and purchase some Hawk shirts.

Please remember that Humphrey releases early EVERY Wednesday at 1:00 PM.

FRIDAY AUGUST 12th -KINDERGARTEN BEGINS!!! Welcome to all of our Kinder families.

  • Students may be dropped off between 8:40 and 8:55 AM. Students will be supervised on the playground as they wait until the bell rings at 8:52 AM to line up. Teachers will pick their classes up from designated areas to take them in and begin the school day. During this window, students are not allowed into the building.
  • The tardy bell will ring promptly at 8:55 AM. At this time, the back gates will be locked and anyone dropping their student off will have to contact the front office to check them in as tardy.
  • When dropping your student off in the drop off/pick up area, please stay in your vehicle and have students exit on the passenger side.
  • We encourage all families to use the student drop off lane in the back of the school. If you have a student that would like to walk to school, they may walk to campus and go to the playground.
  • Parents that are walking with their students may walk with them to the playground.
  • Parking is not allowed in front of the school nor in the front or back staff parking lot.
  • It is strongly suggested if you chose to walk your child to the playground, you park by or on the residential streets near Academy Hills Park and walk to Humphrey.

  • Dismissal time for ALL students is at 3:40 PM, 1:00 PM on Wednesdays. Please make sure both your child and your child’s teacher know how your child will be picked up at the end of the day.
  • If you are meeting your child at a designated place, please make sure they know where that is. Parents WILL be allowed to meet students in the grassy area near the kinder building and the MPR.

Volunteering in the classrooms is BACK!!! More information will be sent soon on background checks etc. Each classroom teacher will give more detailed information on volunteering in their individual classrooms.

  • Please welcome Pamela Ostler. Pam will be a part of the dynamic 2nd grade team. Pam is not a stranger to HH. She went to school here! Pam brings with her an outstanding 10-year teaching experience abroad with international schools located in Germany and Switzerland. Pam began her APS career in 2010 at La Luz Elementary. Pam returned back to New Mexico in early 2020 and was a stay at home mom with her young son. She has begun her doctoral program this summer at UNM in Teaching, Learning and Teacher Education. We are extremely fortunate to have someone of Pam’s caliber on staff!
  • Please welcome Matt Dolan back to the 4th grade classroom. Matt has taken over for Kay Nunn who has resigned from APS. Sadly, Matt’s position as teacher of the gifted was decreased to a .6 teacher. Unfortunately, throughout the district, gifted positions were extremely difficult to find that would keep Matt as a 1.0 teacher of the Gifted.
  • Please welcome Susan Garcia Dominguez. We will be sharing her with La Luz Elementary. Susan will be the .6 teacher of the Gifted here at HH and the .4 Teacher of the Gifted at La Luz Elementary. Susan has had over 10 years of experience educating gifted students throughout the district.
  • Please welcome Robert Gatti as the new clerk to HH. Robert comes to us as retired First Class Petty Officer US Navy. He brings outstanding skills of communication and technology to this position! Robert’s wife is the registrar at Desert Ridge. Robert lives in the Dennis Chavez area, as his children attend La Cueva and Dennis Chavez. He has only been on the job for two weeks without much training from APS-however Robert is a quick and VERY smart learner! We are extremely fortunate to have him a part of the office staff.
  • A new secretary is in the process of being hired. A secretary was hired before school ended in May to replace Cash Money (who is currently a student teacher for special education at Hubert Humphrey). However, when she came on contract in July, she realized this was not the job for her and resigned after 5 days. Please be patient with us in the office-we are doing our best under the circumstances!

FINALLY~At this time Humphrey is overcrowded in EVERY grade level with the exception of kindergarten. A school messenger (SM) will be sent out soon to the greatly impacted grade levels-First and Fifth for sure-however Fourth and Second are not far behind. First and Fifth grade families -be on the lookout for a SM with
more detailed information.

With everything written above, we truly have an amazing staff that will work diligently to provide every student with a high-quality education in a safe, supportive and healthy environment. Our students receive nothing less than our very best efforts. Together, our students, parents and staff make HH a high-quality school that is sought after by many families throughout Albuquerque. I am extremely proud and honored to be the principal of this school. Here is to the BEST school year yet!!!

Enthusiastically In Your Service,

Paula K. Miller
